In my journey with breast implants, I’ve encountered challenges and complexities I never anticipated, leaving me to wonder about the countless women walking a similar path. Today, I want to dive deep into an issue that weighs heavily on my heart: the lack of comprehensive care and support for women with breast implants.
When I first chose to get breast implants in my 20s, like many others, I was told the basics: ensure routine mammograms and follow general post-operative care. However, the reality of what these implants entail—beyond the surgical procedure itself—was a lesson learned through painful experience.
Recently, I underwent an MRI, a procedure necessary yet daunting, to examine the state of my implants. Lying face down, suspended, the pressure against my chest was not just uncomfortable but outright painful, leaving bruises that spoke volumes of the ordeal. And it struck me: I had to arrange this myself, through my doctor, because no one else was monitoring the long-term impact of these implants on my body.
This experience sparked a crucial question: Who is watching out for us? When issues arise, as they did with silicone leakage and the subsequent symptoms, it wasn’t my OB-GYN, my regular doctor, or my gynecologist who noticed. Ironically, it was my chiropractor, often dismissed by many in the medical field, who provided the most substantial support and detection of underlying issues linked to my implants.
This has opened my eyes to a disturbing gap in the healthcare system. There’s a vast difference between the care provided immediately post-surgery and the ongoing, long-term surveillance needed for something as impactful as breast implants. It feels like no man’s land—once the cosmetic appeal is achieved, the persistent medical oversight seems to fade, leaving many to fend for themselves in a sea of complications and questions.
Moreover, the financial and emotional toll is immense. Traveling out of state for specialized care, dealing with potential complications on your own dime, and navigating the societal taboos around breast implant issues compound the challenge. It’s a taxing journey, both financially and emotionally, often carried out in silence due to the stigma attached.
Through my experiences and interactions in various support groups and forums, I’ve learned more practical, real-world information than from any traditional medical consultation. My surgeon was excellent, but her role was specific to surgery, not the extended care or the myriad of issues that might follow.
This blog post serves as a call to action. We need a more structured, attentive system for monitoring the health impacts of breast implants. Women need advocates within the healthcare system who are informed, attentive, and proactive about the potential complications and unique needs posed by cosmetic enhancements.
As I navigate this complex journey, my aim shifts towards advocacy—to inform and support others who might feel just as isolated and overlooked. It’s about raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and ensuring that no woman has to navigate this path feeling unwatched and unsupported.
Who is helping these women? It’s a question that demands attention, and I am committed to being part of the answer.
Warmly with love and hope,
🦋
